Young Christians' Night to Go 'Mad' Jul 7 2003
FIVE thousand young people descended on Belfast's King's Hall during the weekend to take part in Ireland's largest youth event - the Summer Madness festival.
Now in its 16th year, the Christian event attracts people from all corners of Ireland and across the world to its lively mix of worship, teaching and creative arts.
Headlining the festival programme this year was Kevin Max of American band DC Talk. The Virginia-based group have the highest first-week sales of any Christian release in history - shipping 106,000 copies of their Supernatural album within seven days of its release.
Other artists this year included local singer/songwriter Brian Houston, Cathy Burton (straight from Glastonbury) and Martin Joseph, whose leading contemporary music magazine MOJO recently described as "an artist of enduring worth".
John Kee, founder and director of Summer Madness, believes the event's success is due to its refreshing outlook on Christianity: "The festival gives young people the chance to celebrate life, explore faith, share with others and experience church in a context that takes them beyond their local church and denominational setting," he said.
