To partition a country (an act opposed by unionists, by many British MPs, and most Irish) against the will of said country thus resulting in bloodshed, death, and political stagnation (all Ireland economy and problems are not being dealt with by two states and a mini-state).
Scotland, England and Wales aren't states and are Home Nations, which "Northern Ireland" really can't compare to. Just as it does with France and China.

Northern Ireland needs no quotation marks around it. It compares just as well with Scotland and England, and with Wales also.
The name of the country that was partitioned, against the will of the majority of people, was the United Kingdom.
